FLAME will deliver a platform providing high-quality, interactive and personalised media experiences to end users.
This will be achieved by an innovative software-defined network using advanced media services and innovative content distribution systems managed through a control plane providing design time specification and run time monitoring and control.
HCI & UX Network & Service Management Digital Innovation PlatformsThe platform will initially be deployed in the smart-cities of Bristol and Barcelona with advanced network access points located across the cities and will later be rolled out to three further cities in Europe through a competitive open call.
Consumers are increasingly watching audio-visual content through on-demand online services delivered in individual streams, and new multimedia applications such as immersive and mobile gaming are stretching the current network infrastructure and management systems beyond their limits.
FLAME will adapt to the needs of the users providing personalisation, interactivity, mobility and localisation. The network infrastructure will adapt to the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the users using mobile edge computing: moving content and services close to the audience. These capabilities will initially be developed with requirements from four trailblazing user-centric experiments led by VRT, Disney, Nextworks and ETH Zurich, and will later be tested and hardened through two rounds of competitive open calls with a budget of €2,000,000, which will bring in 30 additional partners.
IT Innovation coordinates FLAME, building on our success in coordinating the related EXPERIMEDIA project.
Technically, IT Innovation lead the platform engineering work as well as experimental methodology and the experimentation API and toolkits. Here we further develop methodologies from the EXPERIMEDIA project, taking the monitoring and control of the platform down into the network layer and linking the QoS of the network and services to the target user experience, considering personalisation, interactivity, mobility and location. The methodology will ensure that the technical and business maturity of technologies evolve in line with the expectations of its users. Our work also brings in our expertise in human interaction measurement techniques from ProsocialLearn and an understanding of the needs of immersive mixed reality gaming from 3D-Live.The FLAME project is a 36 month project funded by the EC H2020 framework programme.
